Landscaping 101

So I just concluded a weekend of entry-level landscaping.  It turned out reasonably well but, man, there are definitely easier ways to get it done.  I happened to choose one of the hottest weekends on records (which I don't recommend).

Here are a few tips on how to do it the easy way.

Planning

Don't try and get it all done at once.  Prior planning can make this a far more enjoyable experience.  Specifically:
  • Decide the area you want to landscape.  Break it down into separate projects if necessary.  A string of small successes is the key
  • Take photos and measurements of the area you want to landscape
  • Visit a reputable nursery and get some advice
  • Defer unnecessary decisions (e.g. Don't have to decide the yard ornament right now.  Simply establish where one will go)
  • Buy some electrolyte replacement drink (e.g. Sports drink)
  • Buy a cheap pair of gardening gators to keep debris out of your shoes

Gardening Implements

Make sure you have the necessary implements as getting by on cheap, inappropriate ones can multiply the work effort and take most of the fun out of the exercise.  I was moving earth, gravel and mulch as well as removing small trees and stumps so I needed a bunch of stuff.  Items of note:
  • Sturdy rake
  • Large mattock
  • Small mattock / pick
  • Tarps / plastics

Mulch / Gravel / Green Waste

Rent a ute (truck) for the weekend.  It will pay BIG dividends.  In particular:
  • Cart green waste away as it accumulates on the back of the ute.  No need to handle it more than once
  • Go and pick up the mulch / gravel yourself.  This gives you much more logistical freedom
  • Save a tonne of effort filling wheelbarrows as all you need do is scoop material off the edge of the tray

Technique

  • Buy a big bag of ice on the day and have the air-conditioner running in the house for frequent breaks
  • Drink LOTS of fluids with electrolytes
  • Strategic use of tarps / plastics can eliminate a staggering amount of effort in picking up debris and materials
  • Try to work in the shade or late afternoon.  You'll get a lot more done
